Life with HIV and AIDS

Life with HIV and AIDS

(p.100) Chapter Five Life with HIV and AIDS

Jesus Ramirez-Valles

University of Illinois Press

This chapter focuses on the experiences of those compañeros who live with HIV or AIDS. The majority of compañeros living with HIV and AIDS claim that the virus, while transforming their lives, has not fundamentally altered them as people. They also maintain that HIV and AIDS have offered them an opportunity and a lesson. The lesson is that one cannot live guided by others' rules and expectations, putting them before one's own wishes. The opportunity is to be true to oneself and attempt to realize one's dreams. On the other hand, there are those who claim that HIV neither transformed them nor brought any positive changes to their lives. Nevertheless, HIV and AIDS pushed them into activism to fight for their lives. Indeed, all of them initially got involved in the AIDS movement because of their own encounter with HIV and AIDS.
