This chapter details events following the end of Edna Phillips' first season with the Philadelphia Orchestra. These include her attendance of Salzedo's Harp Colony in Camden, Maine; Stokowski's decision to treat Philadelphia audiences to a mini-festival of music by living composers; Stokowski's attempt to arrange a tryst with Phillips; guest conductors who took over the podium during Stokowski's prolonged breaks to travel and pursue what he called his “researches” into native music and instruments around the world; and the request of the orchestra's board of directors that the maestro to reel in his musical experiments due to concerns about the loss of revenue from the effects of the Depression.
