In this chapter, the author offers an account of graduate employee activists' engaged scholarship and their working lives. The author interviewed former leaders of the Campaign to Organize Graduate Students (COGS), a graduate employee union that she helped form at the University of Iowa in the 1990s, and asked how their time with the union influenced their professional and personal lives. In the process she presents a rare glimpse of activists who have sought to balance their identities as graduate students, scholars, employees, union members, and teachers. For graduate students from the University of Iowa, their involvement as founders and activists in COGS proved to be a transformative experience in the making of engaged scholars. Regardless of their career paths, the previous experiences of all of the interviewees have shaped their views of activism as well as engaged teaching and scholarship.
