Arnautoff was born near Mariupol, in what is now eastern Ukraine, then part of the Russian empire. Arnautoff’s family background, childhood and youth, and education are set against a background of social unrest in the Russian empire and the Russo-Japanese War. His father was an Orthodox priest and his mother was related to prominent Russian architects and artists of English descent. Attracted to art, he received special tutoring and planned to attend art school after graduating from the local gymnasium.
