This chapter considers the early career of Iain Banks, covering his childhood, his meeting with Ken MacLeod, the shaping of their ideas about science fiction, his university career and his early, unpublished fiction. It looks at the influence of Erving Goffman and R.D. Laing on his work, particularly Laing’s notion of the divided self which would play a part in all of his fiction. It looks at his controversial debut, The Wasp Factory, the structural experimentation of Walking on Glass, and the influence of Alasdair Gray’s Lanark on The Bridge.
