(p.37) 2 War on the Border
A History of the Ozarks, Volume 2

University of Illinois Press

Chapter 2 follows the story of secession and roughly the first two years of the Civil War in the Ozarks. It chronicles early struggles between Unionists and secessionists over the destiny of Missouri, efforts by many Ozarkers to remain neutral in the earliest months of war, and the process by which people in the region chose sides. Much of the chapter provides a narrative portrait of formal warfare between Union and Confederate armies, including the region’s three largest battles: Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge, and Prairie Grove.
