This concluding chapter discusses the pedagogical, philosophical, and performance contributions Pandit Chitresh Das made in the final period of his life. In 2001, he began teaching in Kolkata, marking his return to India as a teacher after thirty years in the United States. Pandit Das’s last ten years (2005–15) witnessed a full flowering of his creative work and marked a period of greater influence in India and increased mainstream recognition in the United States. His pedagogy, artistic philosophy, and creative work coalesced into what some called a California gharānā, or stylistic school of kathak. The chapter’s conclusion examines some central questions for members of this kathak community, who, following Pandit Das’s death, continued working to uphold and advance his artistic legacy.
